Michael A. Fowler, MD Anesthesiology Resident Award
Spendable income to support an annual award for a resident in the Department of Anesthesiology at the College of Medicine, with a preference for a resident completing their CA-1 year (the first year of clinical anesthesiology training), as determined by the chair.
Michael A. Fowler, MBA, M.D., was a dedicated educator and transplant anesthesiologist. He received his undergraduate degree from Wofford College and his Master of Business Administration from Mercer University. After working as a high school teacher and pathology assistant, he earned his medical degree at St. Georges University. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he served as a chief resident.
Dr. Fowler served as an associate professor and assistant program director for intern education in the UF Department of Anesthesiology. His great passion was mentoring and educating students and residents. Residents universally acknowledged him as an excellent teacher who was patient, approachable, and kind. At UF Health, he was a skilled transplant anesthesiologist, delivering care to hundreds of liver and kidney transplant patients with a calm expertise that made him a favorite among colleagues. He received the Exemplary Teacher Award in 2024 and the Chair’s Education Award in 2025 for his commitment to education.
The Michael A. Fowler, MD Anesthesiology Resident Award was established by the Fowler family to honor his enduring commitment to education and mentorship within the field of anesthesiology.
