Fixel Institute Genetic Counseling Program Fund
Support the genetic counseling program.
Genes play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. They can increase a person’s likelihood of developing one of the diseases seen at the Fixel Institute, and in people who have already been diagnosed, influence the type of treatments that will work most effectively. Genetic counselors provide an essential service to people who are newly diagnosed, and for those who might be at increased risk of the disease because of a family history. The decision to establish the Genetic Counseling Program is just one of the ways that the Fixel Institute demonstrates its commitment to being a leader in the care AND research of neurodegenerative disease as the counselor sees patients directly and participates in clinical research.
In the middle of a diagnosis, patients are often overwhelmed from dealing with so much new information. During a difficult time, the genetic counselor can help the patient and their family understand the genetics of the disease, and explore how the disease might be a part of the family history. Those who have already been diagnosed may visit the counselor to figure out the best treatment approach or get insight into the possible reasons why they have the disease.
The genetic counseling program at Fixel is made possible through philanthropy. It is our hope supporting this critical research will help lead to better outcomes and perhaps one day, new treatments and discoveries. Thank you for helping to make this possible.
