Dunbar Gram Innovation in Teaching Award

Dunbar Gram, DVM, was a key faculty member, colleague, valuable teacher, clinician, researcher and friend at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Gram was in private practice for over 20 years before joining the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital Dermatology Service where he served for nine years until his untimely death in 2022.

He served as clinical associate professor and chief of the dermatology service before being promoted to clinical professor. A compassionate and gifted veterinary dermatologist, he brought relief to many patients suffering from chronic dermatologic issues. Always upbeat and happy, he was known for his trademark smile and love of colorful bow ties. He brought joy to so many, always encouraging and mentoring students, interns, residents and young faculty. He interacted with residents with a level of mutual respect and admiration. He believed faculty should always strive for this.

Perhaps the greatest passion in Dr. Gram’s academic career was his desire to use technology and novel teaching techniques to meet others at their level, engaging them with practical information on how to be a great veterinary clinician. As an example of this passion, Dr. Gram spearheaded the development of an adaptive learning platform for dermatology which became an integral part of the dermatology clinical rotation. This fund was created to recognize innovation in clinical teaching by a veterinary faculty clinician, continuing the spirit that characterized Dr. Gram’s career at the University of Florida.
