Dr. Danny Newhard Memorial Scholarship
Support a scholarship for a DVM candidate student with an interest in cardiology and/or study of primates and/or international travel for veterinary medicine.
The UF College of Veterinary Medicine and the veterinary community mourns the passing of a remarkable young alumni, Dr. Daniel Newhard. Danny tragically passed away on June 8, 2019 due to unexpected medical complications following treatment for a recent cancer diagnosis.
Danny was a 2014 graduate of the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. He was known for his endless drive, dedication, and commitment to becoming an exceptional veterinarian. He was active in many student organizations and participated in several international veterinary outreach programs focused on wildlife conservation and shelter medicine, helping animals all over the world, including Thailand, Vietnam, Honduras, and the Galapagos Islands. Danny is remembered by his classmates as hilarious, selfless, and supportive. After graduation, Danny completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at Louisiana State University College of Veterinary Medicine, followed by a one-year cardiology internship at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Danny continued his training at Auburn as their cardiology resident, completing a three-year cardiology residency and sitting for his board-certifying exam just five days before his passing. Dr. Newhard, unsurprisingly, received a passing score and was awarded his diplomate status as a board certified veterinary cardiologist, posthumously. Danny was planning to begin his career as a cardiologist at Auburn where he would have continued to serve as the incredible veterinarian, educator, and colleague that he was.
Dr. Newhard received many prestigious honors and awards throughout his veterinary career, including the Resident Research Award from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and the Outstanding Master’s Student Award at Auburn University. He was published in several veterinary journals, advancing the field of veterinary cardiology. In addition to his accomplishments in the veterinary field, Danny was known to be a talented artist and a skilled athlete with a disciplined fitness routine. He was the son of incredibly proud parents, a dedicated, loving partner to his fiancé, and a brother to many of his friends.
Dr. Newhard will always be remembered fondly here at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. To honor Danny’s life and legacy, the UF College of Veterinary Medicine has created a memorial scholarship to be awarded annually to a senior DVM student that shares interest in Danny’s veterinary passions.
In the wake of this tragic loss, we send our deepest condolences to Danny’s family, fiancé, and to his close colleagues and friends.
