This fund was established in 2006 by the Honorable Benjamin F. Overton to support the Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Levin College of Law.
Justice Overton earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1951 and his juris doctor in 1952 from the University of Florida. He was the first Florida Supreme Court justice to be selected under the merit selection process. He was appointed by Governor Askew in 1974, served until his retirement from the bench in 1999, and was Chief Justice from 1976 to 1978. He received a UF Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2008.
He is survived by his sons, Judge William H. Overton and Robert M. Overton and his daughter Catherine Overton.
