Central Florida Women’s Leadership Scholars
GA (Amended): Support scholarship awards to students with financial need in the College who are also student members of the FL Association for Women Lawyers or the Law Association for Women. Recipients must be from Central Florida as defined by the following counties: Marion, Sumter, Lake, Seminole, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Hardee, Highlands and Volusia or have families from those counties. A flat scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded for the first three years, starting in Fall of 2012. (See Amended GA for details)
Lauren Y. Detzel, Mayanne Downs and Marjorie Bekaert Thomas established this fund in 2011. The Hon. Anne C. Conway and Pamela O. Price were initial contributors.
Lauren Y. Detzel earned a juris doctor from the University of Florida in 1977. She is the chair of Dean Mead’s Estate and Succession Planning Department and specializes in techniques to reduce or avoid paying estate tax such as family limited partnerships, grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs), sales to intentionally defective trusts, charitable trusts, lifetime gifts and generation skipping trusts. Ms. Detzel is a fellow in the American College of Estate and Trust Counsel. She has also been an adjunct professor in the Graduate Tax Program at the University of Florida College of Law since 1989.
Mayanne Downs earned a juris doctor from the University of Florida in 1987 and is a partner with King, Blackwell, Downs & Zehnder, P.A., and is also the City Attorney for the City of Orlando. She recently served as the 61st (and fourth woman) President of The Florida Bar. Her practice areas include civil trial, municipal, appellate and selected domestic relations.
Marjorie Bekaert Thomas earned a juris doctor from the University of Florida in 1976. She is the President and Co-Owner of Ivanhoe Broadcast News. Ms. Thomas is an emeritus member of the University of Florida Law Center Association Board of Trustees.
The Hon. Anne C. Conway earned a juris doctor from the University of Florida in 1975. Judge Conway is a United States District Judge for the Middle District of Florida. She is presently the Chief Judge of the Middle District of Florida. Judge Conway serves on the University of Florida Law Center Association Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisors for the Center for Governmental Responsibility.
Pamela O. Price earned a juris doctor from the University of Florida in 1973. Ms. Price is a Shareholder of GrayRobinson and specializes in corporate and business law, real property law, estate planning, estate administration and estate and gift tax controversies. Ms. Price is a fellow in the American College of Estate and Trust Counsel and has served for many years on the Executive Council of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the Florida Ba
