Downey Florida Opportunity Scholarship in Law
Edward and Julia Black Downey established this scholarship in 2011 in memory and honor of College of Law alumnus and former Palm Beach County Circuit Court and Fourth District Court of Appeal Judge James C. Downey and his brother Palm Beach County Attorney Daniel Downey, Esq. The scholarship shall be awarded to a Florida Opportunity Scholar (so called at the University of Florida, but called First Generation Scholars at other Florida Universities) who has been admitted to the College. If no such student is eligible, the scholarship may be awarded to a student who may not have been a Florida Opportunity Scholar, but who otherwise has similar qualifications as a Florida Opportunity Scholar.
Several members of the Downey Family attended the University of Florida and earned their undergraduate or advanced degrees.
Edward Downey earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981 and juris doctor in 1984 from the University of Florida before returning to Palm Beach County to practice law. His wife, Julia Black Downey, earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1981 from U
