William F. Enneking, M.D., is a world-renowned physician and scientist specializing in musculoskeletal pathology and musculoskeletal tumor surgery. He joined the UF College of Medicine faculty in 1960, serving as chief of the department of surgery’s division of orthopaedic surgery and when the department evolved into the department of orthopaedic surgery he became its chairman, leading the department’s efforts for 20 years. Under his direction, the department grew in size and prestige, moving to the forefront of the world’s orthopaedic programs. He is now a distinguished service professor emeritus of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine. During his career, Dr. Enneking became an international leader in his field, earning recognition and honors for developing pioneering treatments for bone and muscle diseases, including a limb-saving treatment for bone cancers.
William E. Anspach, M.D., was a scholar, teacher, physician, and father. Dr. Anspach made many lasting contributions to the field of medicine, particularly in the field of pediatric radiology. His care and compassion for his tiny patients was one small example of his humanistic approach to the art and science of medicine. During his many years of teaching, he shared the fundamental precepts of empathy, concern, and skill as the essential building blocks for a fulfilling medical career. He was held in the highest regard by students and patients alike.
The intersection of these two wonderful physicians is a point of celebration, as William E. Anspach, Jr., M.D., has carried on his father’s proud tradition of excellence in medicine, benefitting from the oversight and instruction offered by Dr. Enneking. On April, 22, 2011, UF’s Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation celebrated 50 years of education, research and patient care. The anniversary provided an ideal opportunity to honor Dr. Enneking’s exceptional service and unparalleled contributions to the University of Florida and to Orthopaedic medicine, while providing a lasting tribute to Dr. Anspach’s father’s legacy.
The Enneking Endowment was created by Orthopaedic resident alumni in 2005, to honor Dr. Enneking’s retirement. With over 50 donors to the Enneking Endowment for the Advancement of Orthopaedics, the ultimate goal was always to establish an endowed chair in Dr. Enneking’s honor. A generous gift from Dr. Anspach has lead to the establishment of the William F. Enneking, William E. Anspach and Orthopaedic Alumni Chair. This endowed position will provide exceptional funding for research and salary support for the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Medicine in perpetuity.
