Theodore R. Crom Endowed Lecture Series & Tau Beta Pi Community Service Project Fund

Fund Purpose
Support lecture series that will bring to campus distinguished practicing engineers two or three times a year for interaction with students and faculty and to support projects of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

This fund was established in honor of Theodore R. Crom in 2008 to support a lecture series that will bring to campus distinguished practicing engineers two or three times a year for interaction with students and faculty and to support projects of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

Theodore R. Crom was born July 4, 1920, in Evanston, IN. He was educated at the University of Maryland, Columbia and the University of Florida. After enlisting in the Army, Crom was sent to the Army Specialized Training Corps in Gainesville during WWII. While assigned to UF, he met his future wife, Wynona.

Crom attended UF when he was in his 60s to pursue a doctorate in history. He became a professional engineer contractor. He was a member of the Engineering Advisory Council and chairman of the Board of the Crom Corporation-the largest builder of prestressed compositive liquid storage tanks. The company was founded in 1954 by Crom and his father, John, who invented the prestressed composite tanks.

Crom was honored with the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award from the Gainesville Civitans in 1975, named a UF Distinguished Alumnus in 1976 and Civil Engineer of the Year in 1985 by the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1990, Crom was also honored as a member of the Junior Achievement of North Central Florida Hall of Fame. He passed away January 18, 2008, in Melrose, FL.
