James J. Freeland Graduate Tax Fund

James J. Freeland

This fund was established in 2008 through various donors, in memory of James J. Freeland, to support the Graduate Tax Program in the Fredric G. Levin College of Law. James J. Freeland was born February 17, 1927, in Miami, FL. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1950 from Duke University and a juris doctor from the University of Florida in 1954. After graduation, he worked for three years at Dowling and Culverhouse, federal taxation specialists, in Jacksonville before becoming a tax professor in 1957 at UF, where he would serve for 37 years. Freeland was also invited to serve as a visiting professor at New York University, Leiden University in the Netherlands and the University of Arizona. He was the author of multiple law text books and case books, and was the co-founder of the graduate tax program at UF. In 1995, Freeland retired as a distinguished service professor from UF and became legal counsel at August, Comiter, Kulunas and Schepps in West Palm Beach, FL. Freeland passed away on November 7, 2000, in Gainesville, FL. He was married to Valerie A. Freeland, and has a daughter, Carole, sons Tom and Jim, and a stepdaughter, Susannah.
