Peter T. Fay Jurist-In-Residence Program

This fund was established in 2008 through various donors, in honor of Peter T. Fay, to bring a distinguished jurist to the law school for a 3-5 day stay, during which time the jurist would visit classes, interact with students outside of class, visit with faculty, counsel moot court and/or trial team members and otherwise participate in the academic life of the college. The idea to name the jurist-in-residence program after Fay came from Fay’s colleague and friend, U.S. District Court Judge Paul C. Huck, who graduated from the college in 1965. Huck regards Fay as a judicial mentor, and he wanted to honor Fay in a fashion that represented Fay’s tremendous dedication to the professional development of young lawyers.

Peter T. Fay was raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Rollins College in 1951, and served in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant from 1951-53 before earning his juris doctor from the University of Florida in 1956. He was in private law practice from 1956-70 in Miami, FL. President Richard Nixon nominated Fay to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida and was confirmed by the Senate and received commission in October 1970. Fay was nominated by President Gerald Ford to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and was confirmed by the Senate and commissioned in September 1976. He was reassigned to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in October 1981 and assumed senior status of January 19, 1994.
