Broad and Cassel Florida Law Review Scholarship

Alvin Cassel

Broad and Cassel, a Florida law firm, established this fund in 2008 in honor of co-founder Alvin Cassel. The fund supports summer stipends to University of Florida senior editors of the Florida Law Review who remain in Gainesville and perform editorial functions over the summer.

Alvin was born February 25, 1914 in Miami, FL. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1935 and a bachelor’s degree in law in 1936, both from the University of Florida. He joined a small Miami law firm before enlisting to serve in WWII. Alvin co-founded Broad and Cassel with Shepard Broad in 1946. Since then, the firm has grown significantly in Florida with 170 attorneys in nine cities.

Alvin was president of the American Jewish Committee, a member of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, a member of the board of trustees for Temple Israel of Greater Miami, and was involved in the Miami Culmer Center for Underprivileged Youths. He was also appointed director of the Miami chapter of War on Poverty by President John F. Kennedy and appointed to the Florida Bar Board of Governors by the Florida Supreme Court.

Alvin passed away in 2000. His wife, Ethel, passed away in 2013. They left behind sons John and David; and three grandchildren, Adrian, Brandon and Allyso
