Buford E. Long Scholarship

Fund Purpose
GA: support a one-time scholarship award to an entering freshman student; recipient must have been a graduate from a high school in Hardy County and played a varsity sport on a high school athletic team for at least one year, though preference should be given to an applicant who played on a high school athletic team for two or more years, including his/her senior year.

This fund was established by Sammie W. Long in memory of her late husband, Buford E. Long. Buford was born December 14, 1931 and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1955 from the University of Florida in physical recreation, majoring in health and recreation.

From 1950-52, Buford played football for the Gators as a halfback and made 25 career rushing touchdowns. In his senior year, he was a third-team All-SEC selection after running for 14 touchdowns, and the Gators played in the first bowl game in school history. He was the last three-sport letterman, also playing baseball and running track and would later be recognized by being inducted into the UF Hall of Fame and Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame.

After college, Buford played for the New York Giants for three seasons. He passed away September 1, 2006 at his home in Wauchul
