GA: support fellowships to graduate/ professional students in the College of PHHP; students should be in good academic standing, demonstrated service to UF and the community; preferably whose service focuses on health; Health is broadly defined and can include activities that facilitate health prevention and/or health promotion and/or benefit individuals or organization serving individuals/groups with health needs; service to immediate or extended family members does not count. This fund was established in 2006 by Ronald J. Spitznagel, an associate professor at the department of rehabilitation counseling at the University of Florida.
In 1961, Spitznagel earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Athenaeum of Ohio, a second bachelor’s degree in theology at Catholic University of America and a master’s at Xavier University in education, both in 1966, and doctorate of education at Auburn University in 1988.
Since earning his degrees, Spitznagel has held many positions as an educator and counselor. He is currently an Associate Professor Emeritus and has been at UF in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling since 1988 but retired in July 2006. He was coordinator of the Vocational Consultation Service, a clinical practice area within the department. Prior to that, he developed a Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment Center for Mentally Retarded Inmates (Developmentally Disabled) at the Texas Department of Corrections and was an Extension Associate at Auburn University where he developed workshops and manuals for teaching Rehabilitation Professionals in the Southeast Region courses in rehabilitation administration. From 1973-81, Spitznagel was a Supervising Counselor for the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation for the State of Florida.
