Terry Hynes Graduate Assistantship/Fellowship in Journalism and Communications

Fund Purpose
Support graduate assistantships and fellowship for students in the College of Journalism and Communications.

This fund was established in 2006 to support graduate assistantship/
fellowship for students in the College of Journalism and Communications.
Terry Hynes is dean emerita and former professor in the University of
Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications. She was also the
public outreach director for UF’s Documentary Institute, which includes an
award-winning team of faculty documentarians and a master’s program in
documentary. Terry served as the college’s dean from 1994-2006, before
moving to her position as assistant vice president of university relations
from 2006-2007. Hynes was recently named senior vice chancellor for
Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Hynes started from a humble background. Her parents were Irish
immigrants and did not have much money throughout her childhood. Hynes
attended Regis College for her bachelor’s degree and continued on to
receive both a master’s and a doctoral degree from the University of
Wisconcin-Madison. She began her career spending 19 years at the
California State University, Fullerton, before moving to Gainesville.

Under her leadership as dean, the College of Journalism and
Communications strengthened its record and reputation in traditional
research and creative activities while deepening its record of excellence
in preparing future journalism and communications students. She won
numerous awards for her dedication and contribution to the field and has
held positions in professional organizations, including national
president of both the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass
Communications (ASJMC) and Association for Education in Journalism
and Mass Communication (AEJMC). She also served as vice president
of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass
Communications. She is one of only a handful of people to have held all
three office
