Fay and Ernest Jernigan
Purpose
Students pursuing a degree in nursing in the College of Nursing; preference to students pursuing their undergraduate degree and shall be based on academic merit.
History
This fund was established in 2006 by Professor Ernest H. Jernigan, named for him and in memory of his late wife, Anita “Fay” Jernigan.
Ernest retired as a professor of Social Sciences from Central Florida Community College after being the first to chair the social studies division nearly 50 years ago. He attended the University of Florida, but received his bachelor’s degree from Stetson University in 1949. He also earned his master’s degree at the University of North Carolina in 1951.
Ernest was the department chairman the day the CFCC opened, and he also started the Criminal Justice Institute in 1959, a new path of study for the college.
Fay was born 1931 and passed away in 2001. Ernest was born in 1926 and passed away in 2017. The Jernigans had three children, Daniel Walter Jernigan, Jerry Earl Jernigan, and Timothy Harris Jernigan. Fay was blessed to receive excellent care by nurses at UF Health Shands and Munroe Regional Medical Center.
