George W. Wirtanen Scholarship Fund

Fund Purpose
Support medical students with financial needs.

Family, friends and colleagues established this endowment in 2005 as a memorial tribute to Dr. George W. Wirtanen. The fund provides scholarships to support deserving students with financial need in the College of Medicine. Dr. Wirtanen graduated from the University of Florida with his bachelor’s degree in 1954 and his medical degree in 1960. He retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison after 30 years with the radiology-oncology department. After leaving UW-Madison, Dr. Wirtanen served as the medical director for Mercy Regional Cancer Center in Janesville, WI until his retirement in the 1990s. He was honored as one of UF’s outstanding graduates in 1993. He and his wife, Virginia were married for 49 years. Virginia is also a graduate of UF, receiving her bachelor’s degree from the College of Pharmacy in 1955. Dr. Wirtanen passed away in 200
