Helen Huntley-Margo Cox Pope Scholarship Fund
Recruit, retain and graduate students in the College of Journalism and Communications by providing scholarships and/or assistantships to undergraduate students in the journalism department.
Provided by Alyn E. and Margo Cox Pope, JM 1970, of St. Augustine and by Helen Huntley, JM 1970, and Chris Stambaugh, JM 1970, of St. Petersburg. The Popes established this fund in appreciation for the education Margo received at the College and for the friendship she and Helen Huntley, JM 1970, began in 1968 when they met at The Florida Alligator at the Reitz Union.
Huntley and Pope both covered education and the Board of Regents in the 1970s for their newspapers, respectively the St. Petersburg Times and The Florida Times-Union. Both are in the Alligator Hall of Fame.
Huntley spent 37 years at the Times, where she was personal finance editor, and then had a second career as a financial adviser. She is now retired.
Pope’s 42-year journalism career was split between The Florida Times-Union and The St. Augustine Record in reporting and management positions in news, features and editorial departments. She retired in 2012 from The Record. Since 2014, she has been a special assignments writer and local columnist for The Record.
