Leon Gibbs, M.D. Scholarship Fund
Letter: support scholarship for financially impaired medical student regardless of religion, age, gender or ethnic background.
Leon Gibbs, M.D. was born in NYC on Sept. 23, 1914. He graduated from New York University, then received his medical training at the Anderson School of Medicine in Glasgow, Scotland.
Dr. Gibbs was a pioneer in the field of anaesthesiology which was getting started in the 1940’s. He was the Director of Anaesthesiology at St. Barnabas Hospital in NYC from 1965 – 1979, where his duties included supervision and instruction of anaesthesiology residents.
Dr. Gibbs also taught anaesthesia to medical students at the Downtown Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Dr. Gibbs established the scholarship fund at UF in 1996 to further educational opportunities for medical students, and to honor his closest family members who
reside in Florida, including his nephew and niece, Jeff and Diana Shamis, who received much of their university educations at UF and continue to live and work in Gainesvill
