James E. McGuigan, M.D. Fellowship

This fund was established by S. Clark Butler in honor of James McGuigan in 1999 to support educational awards for residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine.
McGuigan was born August 20, 1931. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Seattle University and a doctorate from St. Louis University School of Medicine. He did his fellowship in Immunology at Washington University and his research fellowship in Gastroenterology and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington.
From 1969 to 1978, McGuigan was chief of the Division of Gastroenterology. He was also the former chair of the University of Florida’s Department of Medicine from 1976 to 1997. In 1988, he was appointed a Master of the American College of Physicians. McGuigan was also named Outstanding Clinical Teacher at UF.
Throughout his career, McGuigan was the author of more than 300 scholarly publications in medicine and gastroenterology.
