Fahien Endowed Teaching Scholarship

Born in 1923 in St. Louis, Mo., Raymond W. Fahien was both professor and chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Florida. He received his bachelor’s degree from Washington University in chemical engineering in 1947 and later a master’s degree from the Missouri School of Mines. In 1954, he earned his doctorate from Purdue University.

Fahien was a faculty member at Iowa State University for 10 years after working for Ethyl Corp. in Baton Rouge, La. He also taught at the University of Wisconsin. Fahien joined the University of Florida faculty in 1964 when he was invited to become the chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department. He served as chairman until 1969. Dr. Fahien was a developer and proponent of the “landmark” transport phenomena theory and published his own textbook of the theory, “Fundamentals of Transport Phenomena.”

Fahien was the editor of the Journal of Chemical Engineering Education. In 1974, he was named the College of Engineering Teacher of the Year Award. He was also selected as a Fellow of the American Society of Engineering Education in 1985, the ASEE’s Distinguished Service Citation in 1990, elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 1991 and the recipient of the AIChE’s coveted Warren K. Lewis Award in 1992. He died in 1995 at age 71.
