H. Douglas Price American Government Fund

H. Douglas Price was born in Bradenton, Fla. After earning his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of Florida, he went on to obtain his doctorate from Harvard University. Professor Price was a protégé of V.O. Key, whose position he succeeded to in the Department of Government when Key died. He was an expert in American political parties, congressional elections and the effects of party change on the evolution of the House and Senate. At the time of his death, he was teaching a course on “Elite Decision-Making” at Harvard.

The author of “The Negro and Southern Politics” and co-author of “Readings in Political Parties and Pressure Groups,” Price was very respected in his field. He also was veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following his death in December 1996, the Institute of Governmental Studies, University of California, Berkley, republished a collection of his articles. Before joining the Harvard faculty in 1966, Price taught for short periods at Columbia University, Syracuse University and the University of Florida. This scholarship was created in his memor
