Reed Bell

The endowment, honoring pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist, Reed Bell, M.D., provides funding for a professorship in pediatrics in the College of Medicine. It was established by Sacred Heart Hospital of Pensacola, FL, (now Sacred Heart Health System) in 1995. In the 1960s, Dr. Bell and his partner, Dr. John Whitcomb, worked with the Daughters of Charity to create a single facility in Pensacola dedicated to quality care for pediatric patients. The fruit of their labor, Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital, opened in 1969. Dr. Bell has practiced and taught pediatrics at the community level. He served as medical director of Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital, Pensacola, from 1969-86, and chaired the fully accredited pediatric residency program affiliated with UF’s medical school.

Dr. Bell became actively involved in bio-ethical issues when invited to serve on the newly formed bio-ethics committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1981. He chaired the committee in 1986 and was instrumental in the formation of the Bio-Ethics Section in 1987, which he chaired in 1991. Dr. Bell was the founding Director of the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention NIH. He also served as medical director of Florida’s District I, Children’s Medical Service Program from 1989 to 2001.
