Chester Ferguson Scholarship

Chester Ferguson graduated from UF in 1930 and joined Col. Hugh C. Macfarlane to create the Macfarlane and Ferguson law firm. He went on to become the chairman and CEO of Lykes Brothers Inc., a company involved in citrus processing and packing, cattle ranching, meat packing and growing timber.

In 1965, Gov. Haydon Burns appointed Ferguson to the Florida Board of Regents which, at that time, was the governing board for the state university system. He served as chairman for the first four years of that era of reorganization and expansion that separated the state’s universities from political interference. His tenure of service on this board was 14 years.

Ferguson was very active in civic agendas in Tampa, Fla., assisting in the re-development of the central business district and serving as chairman of the $10 million fund-raising drive for the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. At UF he was a member of the University of Florida Foundation Board from 1965-77. He received an honorary degree from UF in 1974. Ferguson passed away in 198
