The Tampa Bay Times (formerly the St. Petersburg Times) provided this endowment to help journalism students achieve their academic and professional goals. The Tampa Bay Times, Florida’s largest newspaper, began as a country weekly in 1884. Initially named the West Hillsborough Times, the paper was moved to St. Petersburg in 1892. The newspaper became a daily in 1924 after being bought by the Times Publishing Co., under the leadership of Paul Poynter. In 1975, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies was established as a non-profit educational institute focused on teaching and researching journalism. In 1984 and 1997, Time magazine recognized the Times as one of America’s best newspapers. Due to increased circulation the St. Petersburg Times changed their name to The Tampa Bay Times in 2012.
