Raymer F. Maguire, Jr. Fund
This fund was established in 1988 by Raymer F. Maguire, Jr., to support the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs at the University of Florida.
Maguire was born October 20, 1921, in Ocoee, FL. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1943 and a law degree in 1948, both from UF. While at UF, Maguire joined Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, Florida Blue Key and Phi Delta Phi.
As a young man, Maguire was a pilot and also served as a captain in the army during World War II. After graduating, Maguire practiced law in the firm founded by his father, which later merged with Holland & Knight. He was also a member of the Orange County Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Besides working at the law firm and enjoying his love for sailing, Maguire was the business director of SunBanks N.A., a director for American Fire and Casualty Company. Maguire was also president of the UF Alumni Association and served many years on the UFF Board of Directors. He was also the former president of the Orlando Kiwanis club.
Maguire is remembered for the pivotal role he played founding Valencia Community College and the Valencia Community College Foundation, of which he was the first president. No cause was more important to him than education, and he made numerous endowments to support education at Valencia College and UF.
In 2003, Maguire was posthumously named Philanthropist of the Year in Central Florida by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The same year, he was elected to the UF Hall of Fame.
Maguire passed away July 10, 2003. He was survived by his wife Sara and four children.
