Horance G. “Buddy” Davis is a Pulitzer Prize winner, renowned journalist and one of the best remembered professors at UF. Born in Manchester, Ga., Davis spent his early years in Raiford and Starke, Fla. He graduated from UF with a bachelor’s degree in 1948 and a master’s degree in 1952. Davis then went to work for the Gainesville and Tallahassee bureaus of the Florida Times-Union before joining the faculty at UF.

He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1971 while working at the Gainesville Sun for a series of editorials that called for tolerance during the civil rights era. In 1983, he left his position as editor and started writing a regular column for the opinion page, becoming syndicated throughout the 35 New York Times regional newspapers. Davis passed away in 200
