Arthur R. Marshall

This fund honors Arthur R. Marshall, Jr., a Florida ecologist and activist who fought to restore the ecology of the Everglades. Born in 1919 in South Carolina, Marshall grew up in South Florida. He served in the Florida National Guard and the U.S. Army during World War II. He received his bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Florida in 1953 and his master’s degree from the University of Miami in 1956.

After he completed his formal education, Marshall worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a biologist and administrator. After retiring, Marshall joined the faculty of the University of Miami as director of the division of applied ecology in 1970. He also served as a visiting faculty member at UF, worked as an environmental consultant and was an environmental activist. His work concentrated on the restoration of natural water flow in South Florida, from the Kissimmee River basin to the Everglades.
