Russell Brines Scholarship in International or Political Reporting

Barbara Brines established this scholarship in memory of her husband, Russell D. Brines, a former Associated Press Far Eastern bureau chief and instructor in the UF College of Journalism and Communications. Russell Brines joined the Associated Press in 1935 in Honolulu, covered the search for Amelia Earhart after she disappeared in 1937 and reported on World War II. In 1941, he was held in Manila but was repatriated in 1943. He then covered the war in the Pacific until the fall of Japan. After the war, Russell led the Associated Press Tokyo Bureau. He passed away in 1982 and is survived by his wife, Barbara Brines, and daughter, Coralie Meye
