John M. Goggin spent much of his boyhood in the Everglades, where his interest in natural history and anthropology took form and developed. His passion for archaeology was truly contagious to those who met him. After receiving his doctorate from Yale in 1948, Goggin accepted a position at UF. He was the first professor of the archaeology profession to teach in the department of sociology. Goggin had a tremendous rapport with students. So many students enjoyed his courses that a separate department of anthropology eventually was established, with him serving as first chairman.

His death in 1963 was the catalyst for his brother Robert W. Goggin to create an endowed scholarship in John’s memory at UF. Robert was close to his brother and felt it was important to encourage and enable others to pursue their passions as John di
