J. Milton Eckerd
In 1898, 27-year-old J. Milton Eckerd invested $600 and opened his first cut-rate drugstore in Erie, Penn. Eckerd’s low prices and high level of service attracted loyal customers and led to new stores in the East and in the South.
Eckerd was an innovator who infused his company with a pioneering spirit. During the 1950s, his son, Jack, helped popularize self-service drugstores with spacious, well-designed interiors that allowed customers to find merchandise quickly and easily. Eckerd contributed many ideas to the pharmacy industry that have become standard practice today, including senior citizen discounts and two-for-one photo processing.
