Jimmy G. Cheek Graduate Student Medal of Excellence Fund

History

This scholarship was established in 2006 by Jimmy G. Cheek, senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the University of Florida.

Cheek is a Texas native, earning his bachelor's degree and doctorate from Texas A&M University. He received his master's degree from Lamar University in 1972.

At UF since 1975, Cheek was a Professor of Agricultural Education and Communication. He has served in many roles in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), from 1992-1999 as Assistant Dean, 1999-2004 as Dean of the College, and then as Senior Vice President of Agriculture and Natural Resources until his appointment as Chancellor at the University of Tennessee in 2009.

Cheek has authored more than 80 journal articles and reports and one book. He is a Fellow of the North American Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture and was named Distinguished Educator in 2005. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for Agricultural Education. He has received numerous awards including: Teacher of the Year for CALS, Alpha Zeta Professor of the Year, and the Morton Wolfson Faculty Award from UF for outstanding contributions to the quality of student life at the UF.

Criteria

Outstanding graduate students in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; the awardee will be selected at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and shall demonstrate high academic potential and achievement, leadership and community involvement, commitment and passion about his/her chosen field of study, personal sacrifice for his/her education and effort above and beyond the call of duty; award will be given annually with preference to students pursuing a Ph.D. or D.P.M. degree.
