R. B. Becker Scholarship Endowment

History

This scholarship honors Raymond Becker, a former professor of agriculture at UF and agricultural leader, who passed away in September 1989. Born in Iowa, Becker came to Gainesville in 1929 and worked both as a dairy scientist with UF's Agricultural Experiment Station and as an agricultural professor. Becker served as president of the American Dairy Science Association and received the Borden Award in 1953 and 1967. He was well known in the agricultural community for his discoveries in the field of trace mineral nutrition and for using citrus byproducts in dairy rations. Becker served in World War I earning both the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Within the Gainesville community Becker served as Sunday school teacher, elder of the First Presbyterian Church, member of the Boy Scout Executive Council and member of Rotary International. He was inducted into both the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame and the Florida Dairy Hall of Fame.
