George W. Tedder, Jr. and Susan Heald Tedder Scholarship Fund
History
A native of Madison, Fla., George Tedder moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1929 at age 3. His father, George Sr., had just been appointed as the first Broward Circuit Court judge. During World War II, George Jr. served as a naval officer in the Pacific Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. When he returned home, he attended law school at UF and graduated in 1948.
Later, he worked in a general law practice and married.
Tedder served as a state senator for two years (1959-61) before being appointed to the Broward bench by Gov. LeRoy Collins. He was "robed" by his father. Devoting 27 years of service on the Circuit Court bench, he retired in 1987, working as a part-time court mediator for another three years after his retirement.
Judge Tedder established this endowed scholarship in 1991 to honor the memory of his wife, Susan, who died in 1988, not long after his retirement. Judge and Mrs. Tedder have four children, one of whom (George III) is a UF graduate of the College of Engineering. Judge Tedder passed away in 1999.
