"Barbaro" by Bob Clark |
History
This fund was established in 2007 by the Gulfstream Park Racing Association, Inc, in honor of Barbaro, a winning race horse.
Barbaro was an American Thoroughbred that decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby but shattered his leg two weeks later, in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, ending his racing career and eventually leading to his death.
Gulfstream Park, located in Hallandale Beach, FL, hosts the annual Florida Derby, an American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses. The race usually occurs closest to the end of March or the first of April. Winners of the Florida Derby usually go on to compete in the Kentucky Derby.
