History
This fund was established in 2007 in honor of Jean Pierre and Jewel Plummer Ahrano by their estate and their children.
Jean was born in Washington, DC, and later lived in Tampa moving in 1934 to Gainesville. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1931 at the University of Florida in business administration, majoring in accounting. Jean worked as the co-owner and manger of the College Inn store and restaurant in Gainesville.
From 1942-45, Jean worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the Panama Canal Zone, serving as superintendent of camps for civilian employees engaged in wartime construction. After World War II, he resumed operation of the College Inn, and retired in 1963. He also served as director of Florida National Bank in Gainesville from 1959-79.
Jewel was born in Gainesville and was a lifelong resident. She was a 1938 graduate of Gainesville High School. She worked for the county superintendent of schools and the county agricultural agent, and later, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Panama Canal Zone from 1943-44. From 1959-71, she was the manager of the former Westview Homes Housing on Archer Road. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, Gainesville Woman's Club, Thomas Center Associates, and the University of Florida Libraries' Howe Society. She was also a life member of the Gainesville Garden Club and Alachua General Hospital Auxiliary.
Jewel passed away November 10, 2003 at the age of 83 and was followed by Jean, who passed away April 18, 2004 at the age of 93. They had three children, Cary J. Ahrano, Judith A. Kittel and Marilyn A. Covelli.
