History

John Douglas Noble created this endowment in memory of his mother, Ruth Selby Noble, a long-time resident of Suwannee County, Fla. John Noble graduated from the University of Florida with an L.L.B. in 1937 and was a bar member in Florida, Alaska and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was in federal service for 30 years, with duty in South America and the Middle East. He was an FBI agent in Springfield, Ill., Boston, New York, Los Angeles and Alaska. During World War II he served as Provost Marshall for the Sixth Air Force and retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. Noble’s 22-year service with distinction in the CIA included tour as Director of Public Safety in Guam. In the last six years of before his retirement from the CIA, he worked as special agent in charge of the agency’s largest investigative field office. Noble was a life member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

A graduate of the University of California, Berkley, Marie Elizabeth Noble taught at the Marlborough private school in Los Angeles and at public high schools in Carmel, Ca., Richmond, Ca., and Washington, D.C. During World War II she worked in the Personnel Division of the Army Service Forces in Memphis, Tenn., and later was a radio program editor for the U.S. Office of Inter-American Affairs in New York City.

In 1973, Noble and his wife, Marie, moved from Washington, D.C., and settled in Reno, Nev. Having visited more than 100 countries, they became members of the Travelers Century Club.

Criteria

Worthy graduate or undergraduate students who graduated from Florida high schools and demonstrate financial need; preference to students from Suwanee County high schools.
