History
Edith Bristol Tigert, wife of Dr. John J. Tigert, was the First Lady for nineteen years from 1928 to 1947. She lived to the age of 100. She was very active with all university functions and with civic organizations in Gainesville. She was a member of the Gainesville Garden Club, whose members personally planted the flowers and shrubs that still beautify the islands in Northeast 1st Street in Gainesville. In 1940 a new hemerocallis (daylily) was named in her honor. She also regularly mended books, along with numerous other volunteer services, for the City of Gainesville Library.
