History
Frances Houston Millikan Reitz, wife of Dr. J. Wayne Reitz, was UF’s First Lady from 1955 to 1967. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. A former music teacher, she founded the Friends of Music, an organization that has awarded scholarships to students in the UF School of Music since 1974. While First Lady, Mrs. Reitz entertained an estimated 70,000 guests in the President’s Home, including John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. She held teas to raise funds for the pediatric ward of Shands Hospital and made her home available as a gathering place for many community functions. She was tapped as an honorary member of Florida Blue Key.
The Frances Millikan Reitz Scholarship is awarded for excellence in music.
