Arthur W. Pugsley Memorial Fund
History
Ruth W. Pugsley was one of the largest contributors to UF's National Merit Scholarship program. Through her estate, she established the Arthur W. Pugsley Memorial Fund in honor of her husband. The idea for this scholarship was conceived in 1982 during a conversation she had with her daughter, Patricia Milesi. Ruth wrote in her will, "It is my hope and desire that the individuals receiving these scholarships will feel a moral obligation and appreciation for the funds and shall later in life attempt to assist other worthy students who are in financial need."
The Pugsleys met in Cleveland while Ruth worked at a local employment agency and Arthur worked as a businessman. After they married, Arthur continued his career with North American Fibre Products Co. In 1951, he became president of the company.
Arthur died in 1965. He was seen by his employees as representing integrity, honesty and a dedication to the American work ethic. Ruth passed away in 1984.
