Gainesville – The Best Place to Live, Work and Play
Gainesville bears the distinction of being the best place to live and work in 2007 according to Frommer’s “Cities Ranked and Rated.” Gainesville is home of the National Champion Florida Gators, and it has been recognized by Forbes, National Geographic and a host of others as a unique and exciting place to live. The state of Florida has no state personal income tax, no state inheritance tax, no franchise tax and no inventory tax. Sales tax is mandated at 6.75%. Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, the area basks in beautiful sunshine during the daytime while the cool breezes make summer nights comfortable.
Sports Fan?
In the state of Florida, the Florida Gators are the sports team to watch. Saturdays throughout the fall football season, over 90,000 fans converge to watch the Gators take on teams from all over the Southeastern Conference in The Swamp, the stadium that three National Championship teams and three Heisman Trophy winners call home. Basketball season draws fans to the Stephen C. O’Connell Center (known by locals as “The O’Dome”), home of back to back National Champions.
Enjoy Theater, Dance, Music and Comedy?
The University has something for everyone on virtually every night of the year. With performances ranging from student theatre and recitals to nationally and internationally acclaimed plays and artists, there is sure to be something to fit your interests. Recent performances include Dave Matthews Band, the Blue Man Group, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Jerry Seinfeld.
Museum Afficianado?
The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art boasts a collection of over 7,000 works of art in various media in an 86,800-square-foot space, making it one of the largest university art facilities in the southeastern United States. Its other features include a gift shop, café, and film screening, education and meeting spaces. A few steps from this facility stands the Florida Museum of Natural History, home to over 25 million specimens- a collection that ranks in the nation’s top 10 among natural history museums. The museum’s latest addition, the Butterfly Rainforest, allows visitors to spend the afternoon among 55-65 different species of butterflies.
Thrive Outdoors?
Gainesville is one of the top ten bicycling communities in the United States (according to Bicycling Magazine). Cycling, jogging, and walking are common modes of transportation and exercise for the city’s residents. Lake Wauburg, a UF facility, hosts scores of outdoor activities and water sports and is free to UF students, faculty, staff, and their guests. Want to simply enjoy nature? Lake Alice and the Bat House, located on the UF campus, are excellent locations for an afternoon spent gator/bird watching and an early evening watching North America’s largest colony of bats take to the skies.
