Honoree
Alec P. Courtelis was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1928, and arrived in Miami at the age of 20. He financed his civil engineering degree from the University of Miami by working as a parking attendant. He founded the Courtelis Company in Miami in 1963 with W. Douglas Pitts, Sr. Committed to the unique and changing needs of the Florida real estate industry, the Courtelis Company offers full service real estate development and asset management services, including site selection, master planning, commercial and residential development, leasing, property management, construction and disposition.
As a hobby, Alec and Louise Courtelis raised Arabian horses on a farm near Ocala. When Louise learned that the University of Florida Veterinary School had a problem with mold in its large animal hospital, she stepped forward to raise funds for a replacement building and prevented the school’s loss of accreditation.
Courtelis was appointed to the University of Florida Board of Regents in 1987 and developed a Facilities Enhancement Challenge Grant Program for capital construction at Florida's universities.
