Facility History
The University of Florida officially admitted 500 women in 1947. In prior years (1924-46), women were allowed to take classes at UF not offered at the Florida State College for Women (FSU).
Mallory, Reid, and Yulee, the first dormitories for female students at UF, were dedicated on February 17, 1950. They were built to house the new students and to replace UF leased off-campus housing that was overcrowded, had poor study conditions, and charged excessive rent. Amenities included sewing and hairdressing rooms, as well as separate dining facilities from the men on campus. The three units were combined to allow common facilities such as a kitchen and offices.
Mallory was the last remaining women-only hall until Fall 2004 when it became coed by floor.
