Patrick J. Bird |
Patrick J. Bird received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Illinois, and he earned his Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of Minnesota. Before coming to Florida in 1985, Dr. Bird was a professor and Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Virginia's School of Education. Dr. Bird also held positions at the University of Minnesota and the University of Illinois.
In 1986, the University of Florida's Physical Education, Health and Athletics college became the College of Health and Human Performance and appointed Dr. Patrick J. Bird as the new dean. Dr. Bird served as dean for 17 years until stepping down in 2003 when he retired. Before retiring, he had more than 30 years of experience as an educator and a writer. Dr. Bird published over 70 articles on exercise physiology and education, and he wrote a weekly column that was carried by the St. Petersburg Times and New York Times Regional Newspapers.
Dr. Bird's wife, Dr. Mary G. Newell was a University of Florida art history major who graduated in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in fine arts. In 1994. his son Patrick J. Bird also earned a bachelor's degree from UF in Anthropology.
