A native of Birmingham, Alabama, she earned her bachelor's degree at Auburn University and her master's degree and Ph.D. from Syracuse University. Her professional career included positions as assistant dean and dean of women at Auburn University, University of Miami, Texas Western University (now University of Texas-El Paso), Cornell University and Syracuse University. Betty's husband, Billie K. "B.K." Stevens, taught and served as coach at P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School in Gainesville. He joined UF as an original member of the College of Health and Human Performance faculty in 1946, serving the college for 30 years until his retirement.
College of Health and Human Performance dean Patrick J. We are indebted to them for the leadership example they set for faculty, students and alumni."
