Little Hall is named for Winston W. Little, who served the University of Florida for 30 years as Dean of the University College. He came to the university in 1937 and retired in 1967.
The University College, created in 1935, included the first two years of college for all University of Florida students. It was designed to provide each student with a “general education,” an understanding of broad cultural and pre-professional aspects of education.
The University of Florida pioneered in the establishment of University Colleges over the nation. Only three other universities, Columbia, Chicago and Minnesota, preceded UF in this approach to providing university students with broad, general education.
Dean Little was recruited by President John. J. Tigert to develop the University College. Little, a World War I veteran who had served many years as principal at St. Petersburg High School, was familiar with the issues and challenges in Florida education. Little also received his post-graduate degree from the University of Chicago and served on the founding committee for the creation of the UF’s University College.
