Chandler A. Stetson, Jr. |
Chandler A. Stetson, Jr. was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1921, received his B.S. from Bowdoin College at age 20 and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1944. He served in a fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Medical School and the Rockerfeller Institute in NYC before entering the U.S. Army in 1951 as an Associate in Medical Research. From 1954-1955, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. For the next 17 years, he was an Associate Professor and then Full Professor and Department Chairman at the New York University School of Medicine. In 1972, Dr. Stetson came to the University of Florida College of Medicine, holding the positions of Dean and Vice President for Health Affairs until 1977.
His research interests were in the areas of Pathology, Immunology, Transplants and Cancer. In addition, Dr. Stetson was very active in the American Cancer Society’s Advisory Committee on Immunology and Immunotherapy and was a former President of the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists.
He died in 1977 at the age of 55.
Facility History
The first students at the University of Florida College of Medicine and College of Nursing began classes in the fall of 1956, and the Medical Sciences Building was dedicated concurrently, comprising 238,000 square feet at the cost of $5.4 million.
In February of 1978, the Medical Sciences Building was renamed Chandler A. Stetson Medical Science Hall. Today, the facility houses many offices and programs in the College of Medicine, including the Office of the Dean, and the Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Department of Psychiatry, and the Department of Neurology.
