Hubert Carl Schucht was born June 15, 1914, Jacksonville, Fla., son of Walter and Emma (Randall) Schucht. He graduated from Sarasota High School and the University of Florida. Schucht was president of the University of Florida student body from 1936 to 1937, a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and Florida Blue Key, and a member of the varsity football team. Schucht helped to establish a student loan fund, later named in honor of Dean Benjamin Tolbert. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and died in France during World War II in 1944.
Facility History
Hubert C. Schucht Memorial Village was originally designed to house veterans and their families returning to school after World War II. Priority to married veterans was continued until after the Korean War, when medical, dental and veterinary students were given preference. The facility included 56 one-bedroom and 48 two-bedroom air-conditioned, furnished apartments. Limited utilities were included in the rental rate. The area also included a commons room, basketball courts and other recreational area.
Schucht Village was reassigned to Shands Teaching College in 1997, and all buildings except one were razed in order to construct a chiller plant and four-story parking garage. The remaining building was renovated to house transplant patients.
