Robert Calder Beaty was born in Mississippi in 1890, and graduated from Mississippi College in 1917. After serving in World War I, he earned a master's degree from the YMCA’s Southern College at Vanderbilt in 1921. Beaty originally came to the University of Florida as assistant secretary of the campus YMCA in 1926, but soon accepted the position of Assistant Dean of Students. When Dean Tolbert died in 1937, Beaty took over as Dean of Students, later serving as Dean of Student Personnel, a position he held until his retirement in 1960.
In addition to his position as Dean, Beaty also taught in the Department of Sociology, introducing courses on race relations and marriage and the family. He began his doctoral work at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, but left to serve one year as the state director of the National Youth Administration in Florida. He held the rank of full professor when he retired.
