Norman R. Mehrhof was a pioneer in the development and promotion of the 4-H program in the state of Florida, and often spoke fondly of his days in the 1920s, 30s and 40s working with county and home demonstration agents and their 4-H poultry projects. Mehrhof established the poultry science program at the University of Florida and served as the head of the poultry science department from 1939 to 1963. In addition, he worked with 4-H as a faculty member for 39 years and initiated the State 4-H Poultry Show and Judging Contest in Orlando. Mehrhof also established the Poultry Institute for Commercial Poultrymen held at 4-H Camp McQuarrie for many years. He was elected Distinguished Fellow by the Poultry Science Association.
Facility History
Mehrhof Hall opened in 1958. Today the facility houses Consumer and Landscape Horticulture programs and is the former home of the Poultry Science Department.
